I've had a problem with biting my nails for as long as I've had teeth (or as long as I remember anyways). What is a good way to get me to stop? What are some good methods? Is it just a habit or is nail biting a sign of something else? any info would be great.

Nail biting is a compulsive habit usually found in children and say young adults. However, it seems that wherever I go in Italy, I find fully grown men, meaning adults, biting on their fingernails. Be it on the bus, on the train or just walking around, it's easy to spot two or more Italian men biting on their fingernails. Now, I'm not so sure whether to shake hands with any man here or not. I've had a bad nail biting problem for as long as I remember. Right now it's gotten to the point where I'm not just chewing on the nail bit the skin around it too. I only do it when I'm really distracted like playing a video game or watching a movie or even just thinking heavily about stuff. So when I am chewing on my nails it's like I don't even realize it. How do I get myself to stop?
